for Projects with Envelopes

When thinking about how best to design envelopes and projects that fit into envelopes, consider these basic rules of thumb.

The most popular size envelope is called a “Number 10” business envelope, which measures 4.125 inches high by 9.5 inches long. It often holds a trifold brochure or a letter or invoice folded into thirds. It can come with or without a window.

Several other popular envelope sizes and their typical uses include: an A6 (4.75 by 6.5 inches) or A7 (5.25 by 7.25 inches) envelope with square flaps for invitations or note cards; a Number 6-3/4 (3.625 by 6.5 inches) remittance envelope with a seal flap covering most of the back of the envelope for collecting donations; and 6x9 and 9x12 booklet and catalog envelopes. (Memory cue: “Book” is a longer word than “cat,” and a booklet envelope has the flap on the longer side, while a catalog envelope has the flap on the shorter side.)

A standard and cost-effective paper stock for envelopes is 24-pound white wove, but numerous paper options are available, particularly if you’d like the paper to match your letterhead.

Oftentimes, the quantity of envelopes you order will be dictated by the minimum order required by the paper manufacturer, who will charge a “broken carton” fee for smaller quantities.
